Character concept art

So this weekend I have taken a few days off doing written work and sat down to do some art. We had a class assignment for Wednesday to create a character concept for a game.. I will elaborate further on this towards the end of the semester with another blog post. So I had a bash at it, I had a few sketches down and stuff but nothing concrete to show my idea. So I sat down on Saturday morning/ afternoon and gave it a crack, with this resulting in spending 2 days with my nose pressed against my monitor, only eating cereal as I was to far gone into the ' flow ' to cook and a thumping head. So this is my idea, I have only been using photo shop since Xmas where I had to teach my self it and with this drawing frenzy I have stumbled upon my style, so this piece of art is a massive milestone for me as well.

This is my main character concept I wanted him to be a Viking and was going for the ' Tank' appearance

 After I did this I then started messing around with some different colours on the Tabard, to me they look like characters with the colours representing their different attributes that I thought looked quite cool, like castlecrashers.

My last blog showed one of my latest Matte paintings, I am trying to move forward into matte painting as I think it is a beautiful form of art and it is an effective way of getting my thoughts across. This is just a quick post today showing work I did last semester in a group project, these are a few concepts and two early ''Matte paintings'' of mine.

This first one was my first attempt at a ' Matte painting' - This was for a Medieval setting

This was my second attempt at a Steam-punk world

This was my third attempt this time doing a Utopia/ Dystopia scene using water to depict the two  

This one was for the interior of a disused school being used as a form of HQ

Here goes nothin'..

Well I might as well get started on trying to write a daily/weekly blog of my happenings. Just a little about me first for any readers, if I get any.. who don't know me.

Also before anything, wanna say thanks to my sis who got me started on this.

Now then,

 My name is Matt Codd I am 22  and I am a rookie 3D and digital artist currently studying for a Diploma in games development thanks to Futureworks in Manchester. I have been drawing since I could remember with this also branching out in figurine painting and other creative work, from this I have moved form drawing to painting then, with a gift in the form of a pallet, digital art, concept artwork and a dabble of photo-manipulation . Also being an artist I am an avid gamer and any free time from drawing and writing I am usually found perched in front of an Xbox360. My hobbies include... Well you get the picture, after all this is my blog and not a dating site.

So today... Well at the moment I have hit a massive wall and for the past few days now all I have been doing is going on runs, playing too much Rainbow Six and Halo reach, eating cereal and watching Arrested Development, basically doing nothing and feeling like crap cos of it. It also does not help that it is coinciding with my art period, - That's what I call it when I have them days when I just feel like giving up and questioning why I want to do this for a living and looking at other peoples material and thinking, THAT IS SO AWESOME, WHY CANT I  DO THAT ARRGGHH - thinking about it that properly does not help.

This is going somewhere, promise.. So whilst playing on Halo Reach I noticed that the back grounds for the game were all photoshopped and look awesome and that, even the starting menu. So I had a bash, hell if they can do it so can I!

Yes they have probably forgot more about drawing than I know and probably have shining portfolios but its the attitude that counts!
